Paulo Catani Barros enjoyed his collegiate tennis experience so much that he became an assistant coach at the same university after he graduated.  After college I wanted to keep playing and working with tennis, explains Paulo, who was a standout at Hampton University in Hampton, Va. He was hired as an assistant coach for the men and women tennis teams at Hampton University in 2001.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management with a minor in sports and professional tennis management, and a Master in Business Administration, both from Hampton University. Paulo, was a No. 1 and No. 2 tennis player at Hampton from 1997 to 2001. He was ranked as high as No. 17 in singles and No. 8 in doubles in the ITA Division I, Region II rankings. He helped Hampton University win three conference titles and make three NCAA nationals appearances.

Paulo collegiate honors include receiving an All-American Scholars Award and being named a 2002 Conference Player. He also was named Freshman of the Year in 1998, appeared in Sports Illustrated magazine that year, and received an Academic Achievement Award from the Department of Athletics at Hampton University.

In juniors competition, Paulo was ranked in the boys 18s ITF (world) rankings; No. 5 in boys 18s, (Brazilian national rankings) and No. 1 and 2 in boys 18s, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Paulo’s has worked from 2004- 20015 as a  Head Tennis Professional on these previous club; Winter Park Racquet Club, Human Performance Institute and  West Orange Country Club in Orlando, Fla. He then moved to Fort Myers to work as a Assistant Tennis Director at Gulf Harbour Yacht & Country Club (2015-2018). He is now the current Tennis Director at Bonita National Golf & Country Club, Bonita Springs.

He says he thrives on the joy of teaching all that I have learned to kids and adults and seeing the results on the tennis court. While he teaches all areas of the game, Paulo says his expertise is having all my students develop a great foundation on all strokes to then use strategy and tactics to grow as a tennis player. Off the court, he believes in building a strong family and being healthy.
